Things to Do in San Antonio

Thanks to San Antonio’s reputation for fun and festivals, and its fantastic attractions such as the Alamo, San Antonio has been nicknamed the "Fiesta City".  The city truly is one of the premier tourist attractions in Texas, besides being an outstanding place to call home.

The summer activities draw most of San Antonio's crowds which dissipate in the fall.  But, during the summer the city bustles with visitors to the many shops, cafés, as well as the amphitheater-lined River Walk located in the heart of the city. Nearby are the Alamo and top-rated museums. Downtown San Antonio boasts several major hotel chains and the Alamodome, a center for major sporting events, concerts and conventions.  Getting around downtown on foot is easy, which adds to the festival feeling.

The Spanish Governor’s Palace is located in the downtown area. While it wasn’t really a palace, the adobe building did hold offices for the government in the 1700’s, and is a rare example of the type of residential construction common for the Spanish aristocracy. This building is on the National Historic Registry and is filled with period furniture and artifacts.

Fiesta San Antonio” is an annual spring festival which began in the late 1890's.  It began as a single carnival event for the citizens of San Antonio, Texas, to celebrate and honor the memory of all the heroes of the Texas Revolution, in particular the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, which was the turning point during the revolution. Today, the festival has expanded significantly, with the Battle of Flowers Parade being one of the favorite events.

SeaWorld is another favorite attraction which features several examples of marine life, synchronized swimmers, the Lost Lagoon water park, and other theme parks with rides.

The San Antonio Zoo is located in Brackenridge Park which features over 750 species and 3,500 animals. Africa Live! located within the zoo is a unique safari-like experience that brings the people, plants and animals of Africa to life. The world’s largest collection of birds is found at the Hixon Road Bird House.

The River Walk, also called Paseo del Rio, is also a "must see".  It is a picturesque park within the San Antonio downtown area, and is well known for exquisite dining and entertainment opportunities. There are three miles of stone pathways along the banks of the San Antonio River. Some of the areas along these pathways are peaceful and park-like, while others are bustling with the activity of restaurants, bars and hotels, and strolling mariachi bands.  Take a river taxi or charter a boat to enjoy the view of the city from the river!

The San Antonio Botanical Gardens and Conservatory is situated on a 33-acre parcel of land in Alamo Heights. There is a wide assortment of plants from wildflowers and roses to cacti.  A Japanese garden offers spectacular water features; there's a children’s garden, and even a garden for the blind. The Conservatory houses the larger plants such as ferns, palms, and alpine plants.

The landscape of the grounds inspires visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the grounds. Gazebos are situated you can pause and enjoy spectacular view of the city. The Sullivan Carriage House, also found on these grounds, features a gift shop and restaurant.

If you want to get off from the beaten path, you can enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, and hiking, biking, as well as many other outdoor activities. For indoor activities, there are plenty of museums, art galleries, and shopping experiences to enjoy in and around San Antonio.
